Wizard World. Comic Con. You’ve heard the names and many of our Nerd Out family has been to some of these marquis events. Over the past five years, another event has had its sights on being one of the largest and most coveted. That event is Awesomecon. Set in Washington, DC, Awesomecon has hosted some A-List guests, panels of all types, and more cosplayers than one could imagine.
Awesomecon Guest List
Awesomecon has prided itself on top notch guests since its first year. This year was no exception. Marvel legend Stan Lee topped the guest list. John Barrowman and Carol Barrowman appeared for signings and panels. Dr. Who fans could visit with David Tennant and Catherine Tate. WWE fans were treated to time with Shinsuke Nakamura and Charlotte Flair. Eliza Dushku (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Phil Lamarr (Samurai Jack) and Wil Wheaton (Star Trek TNG) also attended. The Walking Dead‘s Khary Payton (Ezekiel) and Cooper Andrews (Jerry) also talked zombies, sci-fi, and all things geek.
The Vendor Hall
Naturally, a con this size had its share of comic books, artwork, costumes and props. Several corporations had booths including Geico Insurance (headquartered just outside of DC). There was an entire row of booths supporting science. These included NASA, the National Science Foundation, the Smithsonian Institute and more. In addition to vendors, the grand hall (473,000 square feet) hosted autograph lines and an immense Artist’s Alley. Even with all that space, the place was packed with fans and cosplayers as far as the eye could see.
One unique feature was the Adam West farewell wall. This 3-D standup provided white board areas where the con attendees could write their farewells to the Bright Knight. Comments ranged from respectful to nostalgic. Several guests wrote their goodbyes, including industry legend, Stan Lee.
The huge convention center featured plenty of rooms for panels. Many covered specific fandoms such as Torchwood, Dr. Who, and Syfy’s Dark Matter. Others covered writing topics such as Food in Comics, Self-Publishing Lessons Learned, and Costuming 101. Many of the guests hosted Q&A sessions, or shared their experience as actors, writers, and artists.
Cosplayers filled the grand hall and every hallway. There were Harley Quinns in every outfit imaginable. Wonder Women of every size and shape patrolled the place. Deadpools danced and chided one another. Overwatch cosplayers seemed to pop out of the wood work. Special props to the cosplayer in the Kylo Ren outfit who wore a “My Name is Matt” name tag. In addition to guest cosplayers like Yaya Han, several professional cosplay groups were on hand.
Star Wars was well represented. Members of the 501st Legion had a table and marched through the con on schedule. They were joined by a charity group called the Mandalorian Mercs, and another known as Order 66. The R2-D2 Builders club featured several working full-scale versions of the famous droid. They were joined by the Aliens-themed Colonial Marines.
Awesomecon boasted a little bit of everything and something for everyone. Mark your calendars for this event in 2018!
